WHAT HAPPENED IN THIS COMMITTEE? |

France fell into political, economic, and social turmoil in the late
18th century, culminating in the Reign of Terror which witnessed
the execution of hundreds of innocent French citizens. The objective of our simulation committee
was to rewrite history to prevent such a disaster from occurring by acting
quickly before Robespierre’s rapid rise to power. The committee took place in
the Legislative Assembly, with members from various occupations and social
classes: merchants, peasants, urban workers, clergy, and nobility. Through
exciting speeches and caucuses and special guest appearances by Robespierre
himself, King Louis XVI, and a diplomat from Austria, delegates worked to
negotiate a resolution for France that would resolve the current turmoil
plaguing the country. They took into account
the various aspirations of each social class to ensure a feasible, working
solution. However, since the Third Estate outnumbered the First and Second
Estates, they passed a resolution calling for the immediate imprisonment of
the King and the formation of a new republic.
Austria invaded France, ravaging the countryside and demanded that the
King retain some form of power or there would be a full-scale war that France
could not hope to win. The committee
ended with the passing of a resolution that created a constitutional monarchy
in France that guaranteed liberties. We were ultimately successful in staving
off Austria’s attack and preventing the Rise of Robespierre with a current of
liberal and radical sentiment. |
