WHAT HAPPENED IN THIS COMMITTEE?

The powerful nations of Europe during the years 1884 and 1885 congregated to decide how they were going to split up Africa for themselves. Also known as the "Scramble for Africa", the European nations wanted to peacefully colonize as much African land (specifically supply centers) as possible with their fleets and armies and bring “Western Civilization” to the African people. The nation with the most fleets and armies in the end would be declared the winner. We had two guest speakers come in, each with a totally different perspective on what was happening. One was a 15 year-old African child who was horrified at what the European nations were doing to his home and the other was a British general who convinced the European leaders to conquer as much as they could. There were many alliances and nations, for the most part, cooperated with each other but there were some moments of betrayal when there was infighting within two delegates from the same nation and attacks on nations that had backstabbed. Some nations, after hearing the African child's plea, decided to hold everything to achieve peace. During one of the caucus sessions all of the delegates formed one big caucus group to discuss matters. Through all this, in the end Germany had the best strategy and ended up with 6 fleets and armies with the other nations finishing a close second or third. It was an exciting committee to be a part of with interesting and clever delegates.
